Nice coffee cup!

It takes a lot for a coffee cup to impress me. Hell, if no cups were available I would probably have the barista pour coffee into my cupped hands. Still, it is hard not to be taken aback by the nerdy coolness of this zoom lens design. Unfortunately, the cup is only a concept at this point, and making one for yourself could prove to be an expensive little project. A Year of Heavy Losses

A year ago, financial companies were flying high. But as problems in the mortgage and credit markets have grown, the stocks of many Wall Street firms have been hard hit. Some of the biggest companies have been bought out, taken over by the government or gone bankrupt. The collapse of so many major financial institutions in the past year, and over the past few days especially, is hard to fathom in its enormity. Sometimes you need a good visual to put things in perspective. The New York Times has an interactive graphic up on its site that pretty much says it all. It shows that $4 trillion has been wiped off the total market capitalization of the U.S. stock market since last October. Of that, nearly $1 trillion is from the decline in the financial sector alone.

Group Posts E-Mail Hacked From Palin Account

Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's private Yahoo e-mail account was hacked, and some of its contents posted on the internet Wednesday. The internet griefers known as Anonymous took credit for the intrusion, and screenshots of e-mail messages and photos belonging to the Alaska governor have been published by WikiLeaks. Threat Level has confirmed the authenticity of at least one of the e-mails. Palin has come under fire for using private e-mail accounts to conduct state business. Critics allege that she uses the account to get around public records laws, as the Bush administration has also been charged with doing.

Tell us the truth

Yesterday on the anniversary of 9/11/01, like every other year since the WTC buildings were demolished, there were two demonstrations taking place at ground zero. One event was for the mass media to cover, were the names of the victims are read, various speeches, the mayor speaks all the while television news people recycle the "official" facts about 9/11. As soon as the names are read, and the ceremony wraps up, those who don't believe the official story gather to make their voice heard. This year I decided to join with others who disagree with the Governments 9/11 report of what happened on September 11th. The crowd wearing black shirts reading Investigate 9/11 in white, others in yellow We Are Change tee's peacefully gathered right outside the WTC PATH station. Within minutes of their organization they were met by a minimal police force, and numerous hecklers yelling ridiculous remarks mostly trying to get the riled up. As the demonstrators chanted various slogans, a few men in suits were calling them names, and trying to provoke the mostly young male crown of 9/11 truther's. As the march began, I being alone slowly followed behind, trying to observe things happening around the demonstration area. As I made my way toward Broadway I noticed a few middle aged dudes with clean clothes, new Nike's, and nice haircuts approach a couple sloppy looking teenagers with baggy Investigate 9/11 shirts and protest signs. Having spent many years playing sports and being in locker rooms with other males, I was quite sure I knew what was about to happen. The three middle age men intercepted the teens as they made their way east toward B'way, the tallest one stopping them by asking, "are you guys serious"? with a aggressive tone. "Do you really think the United States Government perpetrated the killing of 3,700 of its own citizens?" The three nerdy teens caught off guard immediately began a back and fourth with the older men, at some point their faces were within inches. All the while the well dressed man kept very cool, maintaining a smug grin, while his pot bellied buddies stood behind him. He used a belittling tone never giving the teens a chance to answer. Their futile argument was soon broken up by an older member of the demonstration, urging the teens to keep walking. I too kept up with the crowd, leaving he three rabble rouser's standing in the same spot. I kept up with the crowd until my stomach got the best of me so I turned back down B'way making a left on Chambers to find a pizza joint. I then made way back to the PATH were I see the same antagonist who were trying to rile up and grandstand the young demonstrators sitting comfortably in the front seat of a squad car.

What Does It Mean To Be A Conservative?

Normally reviewing an album is an easy task for me. There's a couple simple steps, buy the album, listen to it, think about it, then listen again. Last step is to formulate some opinions and thoughts about the music so the reader gets an idea of how the album might sound and feel. When it came to "I've Been Worse" from Oldominion crew member Barfly, the process wasn't as easily repeated. I followed the first four steps with no problem, then came the tricky part, trying to explain the music so others might get a feel. I repeated the second step a few times over, and each time the record ended I decided that I still had not listened to it close enough to review it. Ive had the album for about 7 months, listened to it front to back over ten times, and still cant tell you how damn dope it is.

Beefeater bar dispenser design competition.. We all win!

For active entertainers this bar dispenser may have some appeal. This project was created by ten Swedish designers for a Beefeater competition where the object was to solve a bar's issue in servicing customers. You can see that the "drinks will flow" with this model. The design team, From Us With Love, won the competition.

Wife of Washington Lobbyist Uses Money as Wrapping Paper

The wife of Washington lobbyist Ed Rogers gets the money sheets from the United States Bureau of Engraving (you can order them for yourself here) and then slices and dices as you would any wrapping paper to best fit the gift and get the best pattern on the front of the package (in this case it's lining up Washington's face just right). No matter that she regularly cuts several bills in half in the process, to be frugal she sticks to the dollar paper and only uses it to wrap "small" gifts.

A sheet of money paper consisting of 32 $1 bills sells for $55.

Nikon’s new D700 DSLR

Now that the dust has settled on Nikon’s new D700 DSLR — but hopefully not on that anti-dust 12.1 megapixel full-frame sensor — we thought we’d toss together a few general impressions of the new mid-range pro camera. It’s pretty much a landslide, the D700 is a major winner for Nikon. Sure, $3,000 is pricey, but for a camera that basically crams the full-frame imaging prowess of the D3 into the highly portable body of the D300 — and left out only a few pro features in the process — it’s a relative bargain, and Nikon couldn’t have done much better for itself. You’ll also need to pony up for lenses that were actually built for a full-frame sensor to really get your money’s worth, though our hats off to Nikon for letting you use any old lens you please. The only real complaint we heard is that the shutter feels mushy, which is a relevant criticism and an anomaly for Nikon, but unlikely to be a dealbreaker.

Brussels

This is a picture of a bed that was the prize of daily chess games with my roommate Phil Dragsta. The room I shared with Phil was in a hostel in Brussels were I worked as general staff at for a couple months in 2001. The hostel was in an old part of the city and stood right next to an old ornate church, at some points the building stood within feet each other. The room was different than any other in the hostel, it had a bay window that extended three feet in length, 8 feet of leg room with a sky lite overhead. The room was on the third floor, with the church towering at least 8 stories, with pillars and peaks protruding feet from the window. We figured out it made a good place to sleep quickly, and since we both came up with the idea we needed a fair way to deiced who slept there. So every day after our duties we played chess, the best of three to determine who got the bed that night. Games got heated and sometimes moves were debated and once the board got tossed, you can see a broken Wu-Tang CD on the desk table from the crash. Peace Phil!!!!

The audacity of dope

As part of Jimm Lasser’s The Dunk on McCain exhibition which opened last night at the Tyson Space, the marquee piece was a specially created Obama Force One. The half-art piece, half sneaker features a unique sole which bears two different designs. The left shoe bears the statement ” A black man runs, the nation is behind him” while the right shoe features a shot of Barack Obama. The opening night included special prints created with the shoe soles for sale.

I don't want to fight.

Last night during Senator John McCain's speech, the Republican presidential candidate used the word fight 43 times . His intentions are clear, but something that is not as clear as his war agenda is his eligibility to serve as president of the United States. It seems, "John McCain was born August 29, 1936 in the Panama Canal Zone, to two U.S. citizens. It's a common misunderstanding that the zone was a U.S. territory - in fact, the U.S. had lease rights, but not territorial rights."
Most of the one time Mavericks speech was a continuation of the empty, repetitive attacks on Barack and the Dems delivered by 'Hollywood' Fred Thompson( no offence but stick to acting) and Sarah Palin.
Governor Palin speech was loaded with typical rhetoric and contradictions, saying that she told congress "thanks but no thanks" for the "bridge to no where" money, but felt different when running for office:

The Anchorage Daily News quoted her on Oct. 22, 2006, as saying yes, she would continue state funding for the bridge because she wanted swift action on infrastructure projects. "The window is now while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist," she said.

Two months to go until we decide if things will stay the McCsame, or change, seems like the polls show the later is popular.
